Welcome to the Economic and Financial Committee.

My name is Kaashvi Kanwar, chairperson of the ECOFIN Committee, along with my Co-Chair Tanishka–. In a world shaped by money and its influence, the Economic and Finance Committee explores crucial questions that impact every country around the globe. From international trade and debt to poverty, taxation, development, and financial stability, the decisions made in this committee can have a significant impact on the global community. ECOFIN provides delegates with the opportunity to address some of the most pressing economic challenges facing the world today. However, these challenges rarely have simple solutions. 

This year, this committee will explore the Economic Impact of sanctions on developing countries amid prologed regional conflict. Economic sanctions have become an increasingly common instrument of international policy, particularly in response to prolonged regional conflicts. While sanctions are often intended to influence governments, restrict access to resources, or encourage compliance with international norms, their economic consequences can extend far beyond their intended targets. 

Throughout the committee proceedings, I particularly encourage delegates to explore how sanctions reshape international trade and financial relationships, and how restrictions may encourage affected states to seek alternative trading partners, markets, or financial mechanisms. This raises an important question for ECOFIN: when sanctions restrict a country's access to established economic systems, what alternatives emerge, and what consequences do these alternatives have for the global economy? 

As your chair, I strongly advise you to be thorough in the understanding of your country and its stance on this topic. Come ready to defend your national stance but show willingness to engage in constructive debate and show understanding of alternative perspectives. The strength of this committee will depend not only on the speeches made, but on the collaboration and diplomacy demonstrated throughout the conference.
